Depaul UK's Baseline project achieves National Quality Standard

Baseline, a mentoring and befriending project run by youth homelessness charity Depaul UK and based in Newcastle, has seen its commitment to high quality provision recognised by achieving Approved Provider Standard awarded by the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation (MBF).

Baseline, which is funded by Northern Rock Foundation and through Newcastle City Council's Early Intervention Grant, provides mentoring support for young people aged 16-24 years in the Newcastle area who are making the transition into independence. Fully trained and committed volunteer mentors come from a variety of backgrounds and of all ages. The mentors provide one to one support for young people which involves meeting up regularly and assisting the young person with whatever issues they are facing.

Assessors from the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation praised Baseline's "excellent track record in supporting effective mentoring in very challenging circumstances" and highlighted the "substantial level of expertise and experience" of the staff. Mentors expressed high levels of satisfaction with the training they received and Baseline staff's good judgement in matching volunteer mentors to young people was also praised.

Paul Marriott, Chief Executive said, "This is wonderful news.  Having a mentor or a befriender is proven to improve the outcomes of young homeless or vulnerable people and help them to reach their potential. Befriending and mentoring also brings many rewards for those who volunteer their time, effort and energy into supporting others.  We are delighted that Baseline's commitment to providing a service of the highest quality has been recognised. This achievement is testament to the hard work and dedication of all the Baseline staff."

Baseline currently has a number of young people who need to be matched with motivated volunteer mentors.  If you would like to chat about being a mentor or would like to become a mentor please contact either Andrew Ball on 0191 2536169 or Amy Milne on 0191 2096709.
