Geared 4 Life
Geared 4 Life is a social enterprise set up by Depaul UK and funded by the Northern Rock Foundation with support from Accenture.
The social enterprise provides employment and an apprenticeship scheme for disadvantaged young people (initially in the North East of England) by training them as qualified bicycle mechanics.
The business offers a range of services to the public from its base in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne. These incude:
- A workshop in a prime city centre location and open at covenient times for people to drop off and collect their bikes for repair and service.
- A responsive service where we travel to meet customers either at their place of work or at pubilcised locations to repair or service their bicycles.
- Collection of donated bikes from members of the public, local authorities, police, waste recylers, etc
- Sale of high quality recycled bicycles.
Homeless young people came up with the idea for the enterprise and also the brand name. Geared 4 Life gives its staff the chance of a career in the enterprise as it grows or in the cycle industry. The qualifications offered are recognised by the cycle trade as a passport to work.
